Advertising Young Minds

After arriving back from AUG on Friday, I was surprised when I got a google alert telling me I was mentioned in the Advertising Young Minds Rank. Adstructure came up with idea which is a ranking of the top 27 blogs of people under 27. I was surprised to make the list at number 25.

Interesting to see a lot of other Naked employee hovering around the top with Noah Brier (1) and Heron Preston (4) both working at Naked New York. As far as I can tell I am the only Australian representative, so it is quite an honour to be in this list.

For all the details go to the Adstructure blog.

Summer Heights High Fandom (Word of Mouth)

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

‘I didn’t touch his fucking dick’
‘Puck You Miss’
‘That so random!’

Have you heard any of these saying in the last week?

Summer Heights High is everywhere, it has even started to infect the lexicon of many Young Australians.

In the 1960’s, Ernest Dichter the ‘father of motivational research’ changed the way we look at word of mouth with his seminal article ‘How Word of Mouth Advertising Works’. He came up with four motivations for people to pass on commercial messages. They were Product involvement, Self involvement, Other involvement (altruism) and Message involvement.

Message Involvement involved a thing called ‘verbal play’; this is when an aspect of an advertisement campaign is repeated between friends, it may range from a catchy tune to certain behaviour. This behaviour is then repeated in a number of times in differing environments.

This is what is occurring with Summer Heights High at the moment. My week at Australian Uni Games made it interesting to see ‘message involvement’ play out. Words had been intertwined into a lot of the conversations I was having. It seems each week the audience is given a new lexicon of terms to use. People who did not watch the show felt left out of the joke, when it came around to Wednesday night, we had a few SHH virgins watching for the first time. Through the fear of being on the outer, people watched the show to make sure they were in on the joke the next time around. The original audience is acting as the salesmen for the shows future episodes.

SHH has gone beyond verbal play outs as well, the other day while checking a friends facebook I had seen that someone had used the graffiti function which allows others to draw on friends walls and they had done the ‘dicktation’ symbol from the first episode.

I will be taking a week off from the blog. I am going to the Australian University Games on the Gold Coast to do a indepth immersion into ‘Generation Y and consumption culture’. Wish me luck, as on these ethnographic studies you often put your body on the line in the name of science.

If you were wondering I will be playing on the Monash Mini Golf Team (MGT) so look out in the local papers for our results. Or if you are on the Gold Coast feel free to come along to one of our games starting around 8:30PM on Cavill Ave.

Political Marketing: Vote Grilld’

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Melbourne Healthy Burger franchise ‘Grilld’ is the first to have a stab at the riding the coat tails of the upcoming Australian election. With the national election looming it seems that there will be a number of brands jumping on the political band wagon.

Grilld have set up the Vote Grilld, the reason behind it is to help decide the three new burgers for the range and to get a larger Customer database. There are three parties the Green party, Republican United Meats Party and Right Wings Party.

The video is a little weak, don’t know what they are trying to do with the voice. The instore promotion is very strong with ballot boxes, political posters and the staff wearing Vote 1 badges. I will try to get some photos up soon.

Summer Heights High Fandom (Social Media Integration)

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
At least in one conversation a day I will hear some reference to Summer Heights High. The ABC show has reached tipping point. SHH is a comedy mockumentary about two students (Jonah Takalua and Ja’mie King) and a drama teacher (Mr. G) at a Public School in Melbourne.

The show is a run away success but there are a number of other interesting phenomena happening around the show. The support online for the show is phenomenal. I think this is so important for television shows because people can immerse themselves to a deeper level and interact with the content at different times. For instance I had some friends over for dinner last night and we went on youtube and watched the Jonah Montage from last episode.

The following is a documentation of the support from Social Media for the television show.

1. Vodcast
They have decided to release it on vodcast. It is now the highest rating Podcast in Australia after only 2 episodes. Following the success of the ABC’s The Chaser War on Everything and Media Watch vodcasts.

2. Online Social Networks
They have also set up Myspace Pages for the characters. The reason the Myspace page works so well is the constant information stream, people have something new to say every week after the episodes are released. Ja’mie King currently has 24,000 plus friends.

There are a number of facebook groups in their name two of the most popular

Summer Heights High Appreciation Society
500 members

Fans of Jonah Takalua and Polynesian Pathways
820 members

Youtube

They have also released video montages of the specific characters, my favourite being Jonah has had 150,000 hits for his first play and 23,000 for his second.

Homesite
They home site leaves a lot to the imagination with a dress up game which is an email to a friend. Would of worked better if it was an application on Facebook which people could send to friends.

I haven’t finished with this beast called Summer Heights High in future weeks I will be posting on SHH and;

Word of Mouth/ Social Currency

Consumer Insights

New audience for the ABC

Chris Crocker; Leave Britney alone

Well if you haven’t seen it yet, Chris Crocker (internet celebrity of Youtube and Myspace blogging fame) empathetic claim to stop picking on Britney.

But what I find interesting about it is a blogging story is producing enough attention to be picked up and run in the traditional media channels. Another sign of the times that blogging is becoming a powerful medium.

A piss take by Seth Green

And here is another funny video mash up of Tyra Banks and Britney.

Elle MacPherson Intimates- Interactive Store Front

They are doing great stuff globally, quite an innovative campaign for a brand that you would presume to be pushing the new media boundaries. Here is my previous post on Elle Mac Intimates Youtube appearance.

Triumph Boats Back Again through Divine Intervention

I blogged about their great viral campaign last year and Triumph have come back again with another clever way to communicate the toughness of their boats. Check out the previous campaign ToughBoats here.

Man Cans = Solo 440ml Large Can

Yesterday I solved the teaser mystery of Man Cans. I found out because my mate showed me the new Solo cans and then it just clicked. This is a great example of social currency. Social Currency is giving the consumer something to be able to talk about, some valuable information.

There is also a raging forum debate going over at Whirlpool where they are trying to crack the mystery as well. This has hints of the communities formed around Alternate Reality Games as well.

On the whole I love this idea of launching the product before the general population makes the official connection with the Man Cans Campaign. They are giving the consumer the chance to solve the teaser before they launch. This is the best example of Australian Transmedia Planning that I have seen. To read more on this planning read what Faris, FOI and Influx have to say about it.

The agency behind this gem is The Furnace, I think they have got a Cannes winner on their hands.

The Furnace is also behind the winner of the 2007 AFA Effectiveness Awards Skins Campaign. However it appears that Skins may be in hot water with a legal suit arising over misleading claims that they don't sponsor elite athletes. Read the full story here.

Marton Merton and Connex on track!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Connex new campaign is out and I am a big fan. Leo Burnett have created the fictional character of Dr.Martin Merton, who has a PHD in Train Etiquette. He is in Melbourne, Australia to help commuters with train etiquette.

This reminds me of the campaign that Naked Communication did with setting up the fake company for Hypnomarketing. Creating a rich story around a communications idea. The campaign is a great example of Intergrated Marketing Communication.

With intergration being launched around the hub of the website www.martinmerton.com. But then there is free book signings at diffrerent stations. I have seen outdoor media for the campaign and also banners on Myspace. The content (consisting on tutorial videos) of the site was suprisngly funny and risque in terms of advertising for public transport.

Elle Macpherson Intimates

Clearly this is great they have made the action just off the product on the people but have been able to intergrate the Elle Mac line in through having the girls dressed in the clothes. You dont need to give men many reason to look at the Elle Mac new line but if the girls are blowing bubbles out their mouth, well that makes for rivoting watching. Great complement and itergration into Online Social Networks with all the girls having Myspace profiles.

Man Cans a winner

Update:
Man Cans the site has been registered by Cadbury Schweppes. I have got no idea what product it could be for.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

You may have seen on television the recent Man Can ads. The ad shows men in different scenario's growing Man Cans. Have a look at the videos. This has all the qualities that I talk about over at Musing from Julian Cole of a good campaign.

1. Great integration
The TVC are witty and sharp. There is a slick integration to online with the website flashing up in the last scene. Giving people enough interest to investigate further onto the website.

2. Suspense
I actually have never thought of it this way but i think it is better to set up the joke and then hit them with the brand/product/company. Lynx is currently doing a campaign for Lynx Soap Amnesty which is asking all male soap users everywhere to drop the soap and pick up Lynx Showergel but they have made it clear from the start that it is for Lynx. I still have no idea who is behind Man Cans.

3. Great online support
They do not only have one site but they have 2 other side sites that complement the major site (Celebrity Man Tape and Bra Bro). This has also already got a great bit of publicity around the Blogosphere.

Lowe+Rivet kicking goals

I have been really impressed with Lowe+Rivet work lately. It seems I am not the only one who thinks this either with the agency picking up two AFA Advertising Effectiveness Awards on Thursday night.

The campaigns that have grabbed my attention is their work they have done for Stella Artois Screen. They have launched two direct campaigns for two of the big movie screenings Fight Club and The Shining.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

For Fight Club they painted up bar tenders to look like they had been in a massive fight and they left the customers to ask what happened. The barmen would then slide a napkin across the table that had the url www.fight-club.co.nz written on it. Customers registered on the website and were invited to the screening.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

For The Shining Groups of passers by were invited into the depths of The Stella Artois Gold Room by pale strangers dressed in coat and tails. Guests then followed the sound of 1920s ballroom music anticipating the buzz of a crowded bar only to be confronted by the lone bartender, Lloyd.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The visitors were then directed to another room located down a dark corridor where they’d find other scary cues from the film. On entering room 237, another stranger would ask them to write their details in the guest register so they could be contacted.

The Brisbane locals that didn’t run out screaming left the bar with a mysterious invitation and code to enter a website – stellagoldroom.com

Other great work they are currently behind include;

Another great campaign they have running at the moment is MTV Vote for Snoop.

Which is a group of viral videos with rapper Snoop Dogg trying to get people to vote for Snoop Dogg to get citizenship in Australia. Very clever.

Smirnoff Tea Partay sequel a real fizzer!

This is the sequel to the Gold Cannes Viral Winning Tea Partay. It is a great laugh but I struggle to see how this won a Gold Cannes.

Sure it is very funny, but what is it communicating about the product. To me the people who are drinking it are the people who are being laughed at. To the target market it communicates 'If i drink this, I will just be like one of those idiots from the video.'

However it has once again generated alot of hype being one of the most viewed clips on Youtube.

Drawcard = Christopher Walken cooking a roast

For Internet start ups it is getting harder and harder to make an impact with the fickle computer savvy consumer. You really need something to make you stick out, you need a 'draw card'.

My best mates dad used to love a good garage sale. He said the key to a good garage sale was to make sure you had the 'draw card', then the punters would come in droves. One year it was the Bob Hawke Memorial Yard Glass, the next year it was fake Ivory Elephant Tusks.

Well Web2.0 start up Imcooked (a youtube for cooking enthusiasts to upload themselves cooking there favourite dish) got their 'draw card' with Christopher Walken cooking up a roast chicken. Check it out, this has definitely helped to drive traffic to the website. Check it out. Slow server speed is disappointing.

Marketing Today Podcast; Issue Consumer Involvement

You can hear me on the Peter Wagstaff Marketing Today Podcast, In this Podcast I chat with Wags about the new trend of Consumer Involvement, which links quite nicely with what I have been talking about with the Myfootballclub.co.uk and also the Durex Sexecutive Position.
Team Buying - 2007 version of the Horse Syndicate!

Myfootballclub.co.uk, is an online community that's gathering 50,000 football fans to buy an English football team. Each member must commit to putting away 35 pounds if they get 50,000 members. Then the members get to make all the decisions from what team to buy, to who to trade and at what price.

This has also been happening in the Music Industry with Sellaband.com which lets people buy shares in upcoming musicians. If they get enough shares they create an album of which you get to see the profit from.

Another one to just launch is VIPBandmanager which allows people to be the Music Manager.

This would create a great brand community and the WOM from your new found brand loyalist would be massive. I think it is only a matter of time before a Corporate Brand open up their processes and let their consumers take hold of a brand extension.
Sexecutive Position

In need of a job? Durex has just launched their search for Condom Testers 'Sexecutive Positions'. There is 200 unpaid positions here.

I like this alot and think it has got alot of good elements. It is getting a core group to trial the product and then a clear Word of Mouth idea to carry the message. It is also taking advantage of the new trend of consumer wanting to 'get involved'.

However it does not seem to offer much in terms of embracing social media. Pretty standard 'enter your friends email address here' launched off a Microsite. '

I would of suggested hitting seek.com.au, mycareer.com.au and hippo.com.au with these positions advertised. I would also of liked to of seen some embrace of Myspace and Facebook networks. The website is pretty boring and does allow the consumer to engage on a deeper level with the product either.

Good idea, standard execution

Not too far away from the Toohey New Beer Testers idea either.

Mentos Intern

Mentos Intern,

Mentos have got an intern and they want you to set him work. You can get the intern to do anything for you from making restaurant bookings to proof reading your assignment. I love this idea

However

This seems to be very close to Gold Winning Cyber Lion idea of the Diesel Girls. I am struggling to see the link with the brand. Mentos does not seem to be the best brand to execute this. This seems perfect for a product targeting busy mothers or businessmen. Just cant see the strong message hitting home for Mentos.

From cosmedia.co.za/;

'According to Google Operating System, last year Google sponsored a social networking project, called Socialstream, at the Carnegie Mellon University’s Human-Computer Interaction Institute.

One of the project’s main goals was to investigate how social networking could be improved to bring more value to users. What came of this - and what I like about SocialStream - was a “unified social network (USN)”, which translates in simple English to an aggregation and consolidation of various social network data in a single place (see video below). As Mashable states, this is a more user-centric rather than network-centric approach to social networking.

From the project’s site, “Socialstream emphasizes improving social connections by making it more efficient to communicate with, share with, and view the social content of all the people in a user’s online social network. Socialstream provides a compelling user experience because it aggregates content across many different networks so a user has a single location to discover new content and communicate. The goal of Socialstream is to present social information in a way that ties it to the person who posted the information, and not the site from which it came.”

While time will tell if this will be launched as a separate or Orkut-integrated service, what is clear is that Socialstream presents a focus on benefit-orientated social networking mashups, which when coupled with Google’s large user bases and extensive application set could become very popular.'

It's all custom.. Especially for telecommunications

The telecommunications industry is one of the fastest moving competitive industries in the globe today.

Mobile phones, internet, landline, VOIP are the main components of the current industry as we see it. However, the focus on landline has long been forgotten. It's all about the mobile.

Why?

Cheaper (cap plans), accessibility to information and friends and the ability to organise your entire life in a handheld device.

With the introduction of the iPhone people are questioning whether it will change the landscape of the industry, with much of its technology already on the market it offers very little different other than the apple name.

Then again, why do all the techno professionals love the idea?

It's all customizable, you can make you do what you want it to do. With PDAs such as the i-mate, options that could not be achieved on normal phones (such as sms forwarding) can be achieved if you have the know-how. With the iPhone, these features are much easily enabled with little technical expertise.

Where did the idea start?

Nokia were the first to fully integrate the concept into their market strategy throughout the use of chanegable covers and wallpapers. This was even taken further with the introduction of the camera phone, whereby you could place your own pictures as the wallpaper. Uniqueness to other brands is an essential KSF (Key Success Factor) for cell phone companies.

It allows individuals to express thenselves, phone organisations such as Sony, Nokia, Samsung, Blackberry, O2 and Motorola all emphasise individuality. Even though mass production is the main production method, the software allows individuals to express themselves through the ability to match their phone, to their personality.

So express yourself, it's all custom.

iPhone Madness

So the iPhone has just been released in the US. Since following trends I haven't seen this much hype for one product. Apple must be laughing all the way to the bank with this amount of online publicity. However looking at the videos the most blogged about video is of a gentleman dropping his new iPhone and then picking it up and it still working. This has been blogged about over 60 blogs and viewed more than 200,000 times.

In the most blogged about videos, iPhone related videos accounts for 6 of the top 20 blogged videos.

These are the most blogged about iPhone videos of now.

The DNA for winning at Cannes

A re occurring theme this year with the Lions, was the integration of new technology into campaigns. Of particular note was the use of DNA, the Grand Prix Promo Lion Bonded by Blood. Adidas released a poster every year of the All Blacks team. This year they used the blood of the people.

A winner of the Bronze Direct Lion was Tooheys Extra Dry Human Testing Program. Which also used DNA testing, asking for people to send in some form of DNA to test if they could be apart of the program.

Australia still has a long way to go in terms of competing in terms of making great digital campaigns. However Tequila flew the Australian flag and picked up a Bronze Lion for the cyber category for there campaign ‘Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny’. Back to the Future of the Internet

If you can get passed the annoying computer voice, this is an interesting view of the history of the internet and future predictions of where we are heading.

Jott this gem down

An interesting new product Jott. As picked up by Tech Crunch 'A user calls a specific phone number and leaves a voice message along with a recipient or recipients (an obvious use for Jott will be for people to leave themselves quick notes). The voice message will then be converted from voice into text and delivered via email or SMS. The recipient or recipients can choose between reading the text or listening to the original voice message.'

Facebook gaining on Myspace

It seems that Myspace may have hit its critical mass. According to Alexa, Myspace may be reaching a plateau in popularity. It has just gone from 5th to 6th most viewed website. While facebook another online social network site has gone from 26th up to 17th most viewed website.

The formula to making Viral - Haggar Ads

I got passed this ad from a friend. So I am guessing this definitely had gone viral because this product category is quite irrelevant to me. However it is a really great way to show how to make an effective advertised viral.

You cannot make ads like they were on television, it is much easier for a person to turn offon youtube, they just change to 1 of 1,000 other channels. The advertised message should be intertwined into the video. You have to make sure that you hook the audience before giving them the message.

Set the story up (hook) ---- give the message --- knock em down with the ending and make it viral.

The Haggar ads are great example of how to use this formula, they have set the scene up with what they are going to do and then they give you the information about the product and then you get the reward for watching. In the example of the dog poo they tell you what they are going to do, tell you about the reliability of the pants and then hit you with the entertaining ending.

If they had put it at the end the viewer will just switch off. Putting it at the start people will get bored and not want to watch. Slicing it in the middle people are committed to the story.

The effective was to go viral is simple;
Set the story up (hook) ---- give the message --- knock em down with the ending and make it viral.

Nike integration of culture

I think this is a great campaign an example of intergrating culture into a brand.

Nike and BBDO Argentina made an artistic intervention in the neighborhood of La Boca (in Buenos Aires) having football as the main theme with the aim of generating a legacy and making an authentic contribution to the life of this place.

La Boca is the neighborhood in Buenos Aires which is more deeply related to football and it is a magical neighborhood due to its architecture, its people and the cultural value given by its own inhabitants. In Barrio Bonito the spirit of the neighborhood football game and the arts come together hand in hand with a brand which is associated to the beautiful game around the world. (more)

Wiki in plain english

I love these vodcast by common cast. Again they produce an informative explanation of how a new phenomena works.

The unseen audience

Live performers have been receiving a lot of attention lately for all the wrong reasons.

Case 1. Enrique serenades another man.

Case 2. Akon throws person into crowd

In a live performance someone throws a bottle at Akon, he gets the person on stage and then dangerously throws them back into the crowd.

You are not just performing to the visible audience in front of you but also a larger secondary audience. Where Enrique I am assuming was playing in a gay club and that behaviour would have been looked at in a favourable light. In the harsh reality of Youtube the response has not been so complementary. Same with the case for Akon

Stage Theory for Online Social Networks

A theory I am currently working on for the addictiveness for online social networks.

I think there are specific stages to a members interaction with a online social network. They are as such

Stage 1: Lighting the fire
The initial introduction to the site, Members are hooked by the fact that you can catch up with all you weak ties in a indirect easy way. A lot of the communication is based around this ‘Oh, I can’t believe you are on here as well (facebook), how have you been? We should catch up for a beer/coffee soon’

Stage 2: Stoking the fire
Is where the initial looking for friends has either reached its capacity within that social network or you a complementing your offline interaction. This communication is based around your offline interaction acting as an extension of your offline self. This communication is filled with ‘Great catching up with you today, what was the name of that shop you said I would like’ or my favourite ‘You were so drunk last night’.

Stage 3: ???????

There is an overlap of the stages, I still find myself in Stage 2 finding weak ties and saying ‘Haven’t seen you for ages, lets catch up’ but I would say most of the communication is around this extension of my offline social behaviour.

Warning the Burn out stage:
However like my account on Account Plan.ning, I lost interest because I could not reach Stage 2. I was not seeing anyone from the online social network, offline. However I have found a new use for the Ning and that is using the forum to utilize the combined knowledge of the active users to help mould my thinking.

30 is the New 20

With an aging demographic, it is becoming harder for marketers to penetrate younger markets. Especially since generation Y is so different to the generation X’ers, however the move from hetero to metro for any male from 18-35 has become an attractive target market to seduce. David Beckham (ex pageboy for Police), Ian Thorpe, Hugh Grant, Richard Branson are a few examples of the modern metrosexual who are icons in their industry.

Skin care, clothing, health, accessories, dining, and the arts are many ways the discerning metrosexual spends their money. It becomes hard to distinguish a 20 year old from a 30 year old as skin care technology allows males to cover up their age more effectively, organisations such as Biotherm are able to capitalize on this market by offering a range of skin care products especially catered to males. Biotherm even offer a detox solution for males that spend a lot of time in smoke filled environments or have had large nights on the town.

Nivea also offer a large male skin care range that competes directly with the l’oreal range, both have very similar attributes, however Nivea have a greater affinity with males through the earlier introduction of other male orientated products prior to the skin care range. This includes shaving creams, lotions and deodorants.

Hugo Boss, a luxury brand that targets mostly male and female 25-30 year olds continues to grow with menswear sales going up by 12% in 2005 (Worldwide, Datamonitor, 2006), partially due to the full implementation of Hugo Boss Orange label being released in Australia. The new range consists of younger styles and utilizes a lot of denim, males seem to be purchasing designer wear over cheaper clothing brands such as Jay Jays everyday.

Health services such as gyms and mens health spas (one being proposed by 4 prominent young St Kilda players) are increasing in numbers, men are acting and feeling younger through these products and services.

So guys and gals if you’re approaching 30 don’t worry, 30 is after all the new 20.

From mean to green.

It's sunday afternoon, I was sitting at the dinner table with my family enjoying a sunday roast. My nephews mean the world to their parents, my parents, my sisters and myself. You cannot help to wonder what challenges in the future that these children will face? Corporations that may have frowned on environment-friendly products and services are beginning to understand the effects their products and/or services have on the environment.

Consumers going from cheap unleaded to premium, from 6 cyclinder fuel injected cars to hybrid, from environmentally mean to environmentally green.

Political forces in the macro environment with nations such as Singapore are forcing cleaner productivity through legislation. Within Australia, recently the Howard Government has acknowledged the issue at hand and though have said little about what they are going to do about it, will hopefully propose a plan for a cleaner Australia.

Environmentally safe market activities are now essential for organisations to become competitively sound. The days of when Mr. Burns like entrepreneurs who would annihilate entire forests in the name of progress are now coming to an end.

BP and Rio Tinto are currently becomming the favoured children of the raw materials and petroleum industry with the push for cleaner energy, namely a project which emphasises the conversion of fossil fuels into carbon dioxide and hydrogen to reduce the environmental impact on depleted gas fields and in doing so reducing greenhouse gases (more complex than it sounds).

Musicians are also acknowledging the problem and have come together for the well advertised Live Earth concert which is going to be held in Sydney, in addition to New York, Hamburg and Tokyo to name a few cities.

Partners of Live Earth include Pepsi, MSN and Smart. Their Slogan is SOS - Save Our Selves, hopefully all the worlds large and small organisations will follow suit and become environmentally sound.

This is a viral that is doing the rounds at the moment. With such an iconic product design there is no need to push for branding.

Optus reports: Back to Start.

Recently as many may know Optus had recorded a loss to end up at its starting point of the year. This maybe due to increased pressure to offer better deals to customers as 3 offers exceptional deals with good coverage, better network features (planet 3 vs Optus Zoo vs Next G) or the current issue that is plagueing both Optus customers and Sales staff; Poor On-Phone customer service.

One of the biggest marketing banes is the infamous negative word-of mouth. Like a virus it spreads 3x as fast as good word of mouth and can imensely effect a companies performance. For example, Orbitz (US Travel Company) received a plethora of hate-mail and booking cancellations following an article by a controversial writer known as Maddox (www.maddox.xmission.com) and Kull's world(http://kullsworld.typepad.com/kulls_world/2005/02/why_orbitz_suck.html).

Like this, Optus is also receiving a bad reputation, mostly for its poor customer service relating to long waits on the telephone, ranging from 10 minutes to 3 hours.
As well as this, it's poor retention of customers by offering deals that cater ONLY to new customers for Business Broadband (free router deal) and cheaper line rental.

It's no wonder that Optus are back where they started, it is well known it costs alot more to attract new customers than to retain old ones. A customer retention strategy for Business as well as Consumer needs to be re-thought and put into action. As retention strategies from companies such as Telstra and AAPT go unanswered, Optus loses more ground. SingTel cannot blame their loss ONLY on the saturated Indonesian Markets - they must also look @ the changing Australian market and the lack of response from their child-company.

Optus must also reconsider their Optus Zoo strategy, and offer more interactive benefits to the customer other than the 'basic' must have benefits that GPRS offers its customers. They will find that this will assist in creating new advertising opportunities and overall discover new-to-Optus facets of the telecommunications market to attract.

"Juniper Research projects that the global mobile commerce market, comprising mobile entertainment downloads, ticket purchases and POS transactions, will grow to $88 billion by 2009, largely on the back of micropayments. The research firm predicts that on average, Western Europeans will conduct around 28 transactions per year using their mobile phones by 2009, with each transaction valued at an average of approximately $3.00." - eMarketer, February 1, 2005.

New York Spideman tour

spiderman.jpg

Nice viral for the Spider-Man 3 movie launch: download this layer (KMZ file) and give New York and the different movie locations a virtual visit. Apparently Spider-Man sits somewhere on one of the 3D buildings. If you are yet to install Google Earth then get it here. With the 3D buildings moving in I reckon we’ll see this sort of viral more and more in the near future. It has been coined as mapvertising.

Lucky Apple, gets podcast walking tours.

This is a really bad example of the technology at use, but it gives you the idea.

Great, Downloadable guided tours! Tourist can now go online and download walking tours of the city they are currently in.

This is a great adaptation from consumer of Ipod’s to create a new function of an exsiting product. Wouldn’t you love to have a product where the consumers would come back and give you new innovative functions for your product? Lucky Apple!

This has already started in Melbourne with Red Symons and some other 774 regulars giving walking historical tours of Melbourne laneways. Check them out at the following link:

Intel’s future vision just like recycled toilet paper.

Don’t get me wrong, I get excited when I see these visions of the future. But Intel’s vision seems to be around technology that we already have available, that didn’t work.

The major difference is the voice activation of all the products, which is technology we have around at the moment. It appears the general population has decided not to adopt this technology yet.

Another funny example of these ineffective technology advancements is the ‘toilet paper folder and dispenser machine.’

Kodak gets the picture with this great viral

'We all make mistakes'

I love it that Kodak have been confident enough to admit they have made a mistake and in the process give themselves a human side to the brand. Even know they try to romanticise the reason they lost their market leadership, i think the viewer will let that one slide as it is such an entertaining video.

I am ready to get my Kodak moment again

Twittering down the toilet

So there was alot of excitement around the twitter being the next big thing. Twitter is a program that lets you post in 140 words or less what you are currently doing and this is then shared with all your friends (very similar to a function that already occurs on the social networking site Facebook (status)). After road testing it for a week, i have decided it probably doesnt have the scope to take over something like myspace but has elements that could make it successful in other forms. Such as the upcoming live Director Commentary for the FOX show 'Drive' while it is airing.

This is a amateur 'how to use twitter' video, if you are still interested

Online relationships is it possible?

I posted this over at the account planning forum but thought i would post it here as well.

Is a purely online friendship possible?

When I classify a online friendship, it is friendship that occurs online, a relationship that has had no offline contact previously or no plans to meet up offline, A friendship with regular contact over an extended period of time. When you ask a person offline what is the key to their friendship.

Often the answer will be we have great conversations, we do interesting stuff together, they are always there for me. All these functions can be produced in an online relationship. What are the elements of an offline relationship that you cannot create online. One of the things that is missing, is human contact but why does that stop us from a online relationship? Would love to know other peoples thoughts.

Creationist WOM vs Evolutionist WOM

Interesting video on the two types of word of mouth advertising.

You are all idiots! Now buy my product.

Check out this video for this successful viral campaign. Congratulations to who ever built this campaign. However I have a few problems with these types of campaigns.

Why do these creative agencies try to keep pulling the wool over the eyes of their audience, with these campaigns built on lies. In this case, claiming this new breakthrough of pheremones SMS ring tones.

I think this is walking the fine line between success and disaster. On the success side we have a campaign like this where they have successfully fooled the consumer and then shown the company behind the trick at the last minute.

However just look at the number of false blogs that have bombed and killed the brands reputation. The blog Consumerist.com have come up with the fake blog awards ‘The flogs’ held every year giving the agency of the year a pat on the back for treating the audience like dickheads and creating fake blogs.

‘The consumer is your mother.’ (Sorry forgot who quote this)

Making hard things simple- Joost Commercial

What a great way to describe the simplicity of an offer, a rather hard concept to fathom is explained by an old man (usually the nemesis of new technology). The simplicity is extended through the Cook show style explanation of the items, combined to create Joost. Plus this is another exciting step forward in the ‘digital has overtaken my life’ revolution

T post great business concept

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Every company wishes that they could supply to exact demand of their market. Well online start up t post has worked out a business plan to solve this exact problem. The online clothing company works on the plan that they only make as many t shirts as they have subscribers. They produce a one off t-shirt every 6 weeks, they make only the amount of subscribers they have 1,753.

I like this proposition because there is a feeling of exclusivity as the limited run of these shirts around the world. All t shirts are inspired by current obscure news events. It gives added meaning to the wearer of the t shirt as well. It gives the subscriber the chance to tell a story about what they are wearing another intangible benefit for the customer.

Advertising Mirror a ineffective channel

I used to be all for ambient marketing but this latest technology of advertising mirrors just has so many problems. They have clearly not thought through the functionality of a mirror and when and how people use it. When the girl tries to step back to have a look at her full body the mirror goes back to the advertisement. When the consumer tries to read what is on the ad because they have bad eyes, the ad reverts to a mirror.

From bad ambient to good ambient- Wonderbra

This ambient marketing campaign works because as the over used word states it ‘cuts through’. It cuts through in this case because it takes a known process that has become part of everyday life, the sliding billboard everyone is aware of its process. However when the unexpected happens (the next slide doesn’t come through) it captures people attention. I think this piece works great because it sits on the fine line between a mistake and great marketing.

Peasy.com Online Parking Spots

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Is an online marketplace for parking spaces, enabling drivers to search for and book spaces before they leave home, and letting British homeowners monetize unused parking spaces by adding them to the Peasy network. This is a great idea for people who don’t use their car spaces in urban areas. However I can only see it working with people leasing one year spots instead of booking a different spot daily which they are trying to promote as well. As it just seems like too much work for too little value on a daily basis.

Neuro Study to predict Viral Success

OTOInsights: "One to One Interactive and Innerscope Research had 25 individuals observe 11 viral videos that were uploaded to NewGrounds.com. Our hypothesis was that neurological measures of media engagement could accurately predict the ratings that the NewGrounds online community assigned to viral content.

While observing the 11 viral videos, each participant wore Innerscope's state-of-the-art smart clothing which translated noninvasive measures of brain activity into an easy to interpret, time-locked index of emotional engagement. One to One Interactive developed multiple regression models to determine if a videoĆ¢€™s rank score on the NewGrounds website could be predicted from the results of the study. The results of the analysis revealed that the reviewer assigned score (1-10) on the New Grounds website could be predicted with an accuracy of 76.8%."

Hyundai Locate 3 strangers contest

Seen at adverlab 'Hyundai is running this Mash+Seek contest where they pick 16 people, split them in four groups, and then have the contestants locate the three other people in their teams. The only lead is a quarter of a face, although Hyundai is promising more tips. "The first team of four to find one another wins a new Elantra each."

This is a very cool way to do "consumer-generated content" because guess what? The challenge is not only about locating someone, it is also about making yourself visible, somehow. Blogs? Postings on Craigslist? Google AdWords? I'd do a typical chain letter asking everyone to forward it on.'

Nokia now remembers who their customers are.

In recent times Nokia has become one of the least favoured products for one of their most important customers - the salesperson.

Over the last year Nokia has seen tremendous scrutiny surrounding their various products.
For one, every phone released had a ELF (Early Life Failure) rating of 30% (According to private sources). Now, Nokia does sell lots and lots and lots and lots of phones.
Even with the Nokia rewards scheme, salespeople still sell Nokias.

But many have had enough. Salespeople are required to push the most reliable phones on the market to customers as to avoid backlash from these customers according to the policies of many organisations within the telecommunications industry.

Nokia noticed their sales have started to lose their balance over the last few months around Melbourne and Sydney losing ground to Sony Ericsson and Samsung. (according to franchise information)

Nokia in response to this have held several launch parties for their new N95. This is held for again one of their most important customers: The salespeople. They are required to come to these parties where several celebrities as well as Nokia representatives are showing the N95 to those involved in the sales side of it all.

Now as one of the first to actually get to use this product, I think Nokia has finally got their groove back.
