10 historical moments in Youtube Advertising

After my post a year ago on 12 historical Social Media Marketing moments, I thought I would follow it up with historical moments of Youtube.

1. LonelyGirl15 and Heshey’s (June 2006)

In the Lonelygirl15 episode "Truckstop Reunion" the first branded integration on Youtube happened, it featured the characters eating and displaying Hershey's Icebreaker's Sours Gum.

2. Introduce Brand Channels (August 2006)
Companies were given the opportunity to create their own programming. One of the most renowned branded Youtube accounts BlendTec is actually not a branded channel, proving that a sponsored channel is not always needed. Blendtec was set up as just a normal account. Recently Ford Fiesta and Blendtec teamed up to create the monster which is an ad within an ad.

3. Youtube acquired by Google (October 2006)
Google Inc. announces that it had acquired YouTube for US$1.65 billion in Google stock. Advertisers get excited that Google will be able to put a good advertising back end into Youtube.

4. Dove Evolution Video launched (October 2006)

5. Youtube creates the Partners Program (May 2007)
Youtube starts paying their best content creators. A number of top 100 most subscribed now get paid a percentage of the earnings of money made from advertising sold next to their content.

This week they have come out and announced special Partnerships for content creators that go viral, so the JK wedding dance video would now theoretically make money for the newly married.

6. Burger King sponsor the Youtube only ‘Seth MacFarlane's Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy’ (August 2008)
It becomes the third most successful b randed channel on Youtube

7. Fred cracks a million subscribers (April 2009)
"Fred" has been sponsored since its inception by the Zipit Wireless Messenger (Z2). He has generated in excess of $100,000 from ad revenue and sponsorship.

8. Youtube puts a halt to third party ads (May 2009)
YouTube put a halt to brand placement advertising in YouTube videos, as they were advertisements that didn’t bring YouTube any revenue. Any partner who was found to do brand placement would lose their contract. This puts an end to Vloggers dealing directly with brands. Example of Vlogger direct deal - starring Lisa Nova

9. Ugly Carl Jnr Burger Deal (June 2009)
Google brokered a deal with Carls Jnr Burger where they would get more than 10 of the top 50 subscribed vloggers to create videos about how they eat their burger. It was a cluttered mess, which made most people resent the stars and Carls Jnr.

10. Still waiting…
I’ve been waiting three years for a proper advertising model which doesn’t require a minimum media spend of $20,000! Take a note from Facebook’s Advertising Model. Get your shit together.

Is there any moments I have missed?

Five* new Australian Marketing Blogs that you probably have not read!

Last month, I showcased five blogs that started in the month of October, well I am back at it again with four new blogs that have just started in the month of November. So get your RSS readers ready and check out these great Australian Marketing reads.

Another Advertising Wanker
With a name like that, how could you not like this blog? He has had some cracking posts to start off with including his questioning of Commonwealth Bank over the recent fiasco and an interesting perspective on the alcohol advertising regulations.

Think Story Experience
'Matt Jones' reflections on the role of thinking, stories, and experiences in building brands and strengthening ideas.' He actually started blogging in September, except this month he has really stepped it up, writing a post every day and good quality posts as well.

Who put the devil in you?
Is written by Bones Lawley, I really like that name, he joins the raft of student bloggers who are blogging about Marketing. Some great posts on Movember and Doughnut King's strategy.

Stop, collaborate and listen
Written by Andy Mallinson the ex-MD of NetX Sydney, he started off by creating a list of the Social Media Monitoring tools in Australia, which is a handy little list. I look forward to reading more.

* It was originally Four blogs but Clare alerted me to her blog via Twitter, which is also a great read!

Clare Lancaster
Clare has also set up a blog ‘for enterprising women creating and working online’. It is great to see more women represented in the online marketing space. She is doing some great work covering off the basics and we can all learn a thing or two reading these posts.

Gavin called me the Pied Piper of New Marketing Blogs, when searching the interwebs for video on Pied Piper, I came across this old favourite of mine, DJ Pied Piper - Do you really like it?

Bigpond on Twitter is a legal issue

Alot of people have been talking about Bigpond on Twitter. Mostly people have been sticking the boot in. I think this was necessary, so that Bigpond knew that the current way they were using Twitter was incorrect.

However I think this problem cannot be fixed by a Marketer, it needs someone with a grasp on the laws behind online publishing. I think we should be using our social networks to find someone from the legal field who can help give clarification to Bigpond on the legality around the Spam Act. As far as I can see this could have major ramifications on Australian businesses who want to answer any problems from customers on social media sites.

As far as I can understand, BigPond monitoring and answering comments on Twitter is currently illegal. However I am not a lawyer so I do not know what this legislation actually means. All I know is that it has major implications on all Australian Marketers wanting to respond to people talking about their brands online.

Update: Zac Martin has had a look at the legislation, check out his post discussing the SPAM Act

Top 50 Australian Marketing Pioneer Blogs

Welcome to the first ‘Top 50 Australian Marketing Pioneers Blog’ list.

I realised after nearly 2 years of blogging, I really didn’t have any idea of who was blogging around the topic of Marketing in Australia. I decided to make this list in order to shed light on the Australian Marketing Blogosphere and hopefully connect you with some great Australian Marketing thinkers.

The ranking system is very similar to the AdAge Power 150 methodology. I have used the same variable to rank the blogs (Google Page Ranks (10), Technorati Authority (10), Technoati Blog Reactions (10), Alexa Page Ranking (10), Bloglines (10).

I have also added a Pioneer score (10), this is a subjective score which is scored in terms of the blogs ability to have pioneering thoughts about Marketing. I believe it is our role as Marketing bloggers to discover and inform the rest of the industry about the changing Marketing landscape.

To be eligible

1. The author of the blog must be Australian or living in Australia
2. The main focus of their blog must be on a topic within Marketing (Advertising, Social Media Marketing, Public Relations, Marketing Research, etc.)

If you are not on this list and would like to be, please email julian@nakedcomms.com.au
This list will be updated every 3 months (Next update - September 2008).

This list will be published in the August Edition of Marketing Magazine.

Practice what I preach challenge

I have just written a post over at Marketing Magazine Blog. It is about the fact that Advertising Agencies cannot be trusted with Social Media Campaigns. Putting such a strong case forward I have also backed my argument by laying the challenge of proving that I can teach any company how to have a social media presence.

I think this will be a great opportunity to teach Marketers, how to properly use Social Media. I would really like to get my regular readers to help build on ideas of how companies should best act in this space. So if you know any tips or case studies please let me know.

MyBower - When 2 hobbies meet

Me at the 2007 Western Antique Bottle Show, Williamstown

One of my hobbies outside of writing this blog is collecting Antique Bottles. I collect suburban Milk Bottles and Eucalyptus bottles. I am currently the President of the Western Antique Bottle Club one of the last four clubs in Melbourne. Blogging and my bottle collection had been fairly removed till the other month when I was looking in the mail and I found some advertising for a online social network site for collectors called, Mybower.

A pretty simple site however I was impressed with the way they engaged the club. They had already set up a page for the club and gave a username and password for the club to use. Therefore removing the barrier of the trouble associated with setting up a page.

The other day, Zac was talking to me about how annoying it was to have to constantly keep setting up accounts for different sites, I guess this is one solution to that problem. I wonder what other creative solutions will be thought of for this problem?

The Gruen Transfer - A television series looking at Advertising

Here is the promotion for the The Greun Transfer, a 10 part series looking at how Advertising works. Launching May 28th on the ABC. Should be interesting, pity they got Wil Anderson to host this program, he is such a wank.

On reflection there is a great fit for him to host a show looking at the Advertising Industry.

And here is the definition of The Greun Transfer

'The consumer's decision-making consciousness subsides and he or she is more likely to make an impulse purchase because of unconscious influences of lighting, ambient sound and music, spatial choices, visual detail, mirrored and polished surfaces, climate control, and the sequence and order of interior storefronts, etc.

The effect is marked by a slower walking pace and glazed eyes.'

When did Australian banks become the funny men?

It seems like the Australian Banks are all working off the same piece of insight. We all have to be the funny men. It is no longer about hitting people with the facts, it is about creating a inviting brand personality. Who would of thought 2 years ago that an advertising agency most interesting client would be a company in the banking industry?

At the moment my favourite ones are the ANZ Credit Card.

Lastly back in 1982 when the insight was for banks to be hip and cool

Plinking revisited

The future for product placement looks bright for all parties involved.

I looked at bringing plinking out to Australia about a year ago. But after a little investigation, I realised the Australian Market is not big enough, this seems to be the problem with a lot of digital ideas coming to Australia. However it seems that the idea is going great guns in America. With another startup overlay.tv giving it a good go. There business model works better because they are asking the viewers to places the product placement within the videos rather than the advertisers having to sit through and put the placements in.

Thanks bigsecretpizzaparty for this find.

Community Involvement/Nike and Nedbank Podcast

I have been unable to write for the last few weeks because of the slow internet at hostels I have been staying at. However I did record a podcast with Peter Wagstaff on Marketing Today about some of the interesting advertising I have seen in South Africa and Argentina.

So click on the link and listen to the endless interruptions from doing an interview on a public phone on the streets of Buenos Aires.

1st Birthday of Adspace-Pioneers and the story of how I got started

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Happy 1 year and 11 days birthday Adspace-Pioneer.

I thought now was the right time to tell the story of how I started Adspace-Pioneers.

Last year I finished my degree and joined the other 5,312 recently graduated students applying for the 17 jobs in advertising.

I did all the things they suggested for getting a job; I got an internship/part time job at an agency, went to every university networking night and begged my parents to ring their long lost friends in the industry to hook me up with a job.

All I ended up with was a stack of business cards.

I dreaded the next step the awkward phone conversation; with the pleasantries aside I would get to business.

‘So any jobs on the radar “insert business card name here”?’

…….

‘No, Julian I will keep an eye out for you, Ah that’s a client on the other line. I will give you a call if I hear of anything.’

I kept thinking there must be an easier way than this. Then one day it just clicked for me. I was asking for so much and giving them nothing back.

I could understand it though, I was asking them for a massive break and then giving them nothing back.

Around this I was working at Sputnik Agency, I was working one day a week preparing a trend report which went out to all the employees. 4 or 5 new trends that people were talking about.

Then it just clicked.

I should be emailing this out to my contacts. This was valuable information; people are time poor and want condensed information. I sent an email out to my contacts telling them I have set up a trend report blog that I will email you every week with updates.

It just made so much sense. I was able to stay top of mind with all my contacts, they were receiving valuable information. I had something to talk to them about. No longer did I feel bad about asking for a job, I just put a note on the end of my email saying I am still looking for a job.

A year on the blog has become more of a tool to make sure that I am keeping up to date with what is happening in the digital environment.

It is great to see other students following this path as well, notably Zac Martin a Monash Student who has started the blog Making Marketing.

And another birthday card

The Curse of Knowledge, Social Media Guide

Do you often start explaining something that you are really passionate about and get blank looks from the people you are with?

You are probably suffering from the Curse of Knowledge.

I am reading a really cool book at the moment ‘Made to Stick’. It suggests why some ideas stick and other fail. Check out the videos for more information.

One of the interesting concepts that is brought up is the idea of ‘The Curse of Knowledge’. It suggests that your knowledge on a subject is a curse because you struggle to remember what it is like to not remember something. This happens with me with Social Media/Web2.0. My knowledge about the subject is a curse because I cannot remember what it is like to not know anything and assume everyone has the same knowledge as me.

Therefore I have found this good resource for myself. it is a Whitepaper on Advertising 2.0. and explains Social Media Advertising in a really simple way.

History of Vegemite, Consumer Involvement Old Hat

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Here is the first lesson from Symbols of Australia

As much as marketers like to think about Consumer Involvement as this new marketing technique it is not. The story of the Australian icon Vegemite is testament that this technique has been around for years.

‘In 1910, the popular English spread Marmite was registered in Australia. Made from beef extract, the product is still in exsistence today. In early 1923, Fred Walker, an enterprising general merchant produced a vegetable extract. To position it in direct compeititon with Marmite, he called it Parwill: ‘Marmite-mother might, Parwill- father will.

The brand didn’t take on and Walker assumed it may have had something to do with the name. Late 1923 he conducted a competition to rename it. The result was Vegemite, which Walker duly registered.’

A recent example that comes to mind of the food industry using this consumer involvement in the product naming is the Name It Burger competition from McDonalds. Link here.

In the picture above is a Vegemite ad from 1923 and a bottle from 1950 and one from the 1980’s.

Advertising Young Minds

After arriving back from AUG on Friday, I was surprised when I got a google alert telling me I was mentioned in the Advertising Young Minds Rank. Adstructure came up with idea which is a ranking of the top 27 blogs of people under 27. I was surprised to make the list at number 25.

Interesting to see a lot of other Naked employee hovering around the top with Noah Brier (1) and Heron Preston (4) both working at Naked New York. As far as I can tell I am the only Australian representative, so it is quite an honour to be in this list.

For all the details go to the Adstructure blog.

Man Cans = Solo 440ml Large Can

Yesterday I solved the teaser mystery of Man Cans. I found out because my mate showed me the new Solo cans and then it just clicked. This is a great example of social currency. Social Currency is giving the consumer something to be able to talk about, some valuable information.

There is also a raging forum debate going over at Whirlpool where they are trying to crack the mystery as well. This has hints of the communities formed around Alternate Reality Games as well.

On the whole I love this idea of launching the product before the general population makes the official connection with the Man Cans Campaign. They are giving the consumer the chance to solve the teaser before they launch. This is the best example of Australian Transmedia Planning that I have seen. To read more on this planning read what Faris, FOI and Influx have to say about it.

The agency behind this gem is The Furnace, I think they have got a Cannes winner on their hands.

The Furnace is also behind the winner of the 2007 AFA Effectiveness Awards Skins Campaign. However it appears that Skins may be in hot water with a legal suit arising over misleading claims that they don't sponsor elite athletes. Read the full story here.

Elle Macpherson Intimates

Clearly this is great they have made the action just off the product on the people but have been able to intergrate the Elle Mac line in through having the girls dressed in the clothes. You dont need to give men many reason to look at the Elle Mac new line but if the girls are blowing bubbles out their mouth, well that makes for rivoting watching. Great complement and itergration into Online Social Networks with all the girls having Myspace profiles.

Lowe+Rivet kicking goals

I have been really impressed with Lowe+Rivet work lately. It seems I am not the only one who thinks this either with the agency picking up two AFA Advertising Effectiveness Awards on Thursday night.

The campaigns that have grabbed my attention is their work they have done for Stella Artois Screen. They have launched two direct campaigns for two of the big movie screenings Fight Club and The Shining.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

For Fight Club they painted up bar tenders to look like they had been in a massive fight and they left the customers to ask what happened. The barmen would then slide a napkin across the table that had the url www.fight-club.co.nz written on it. Customers registered on the website and were invited to the screening.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

For The Shining Groups of passers by were invited into the depths of The Stella Artois Gold Room by pale strangers dressed in coat and tails. Guests then followed the sound of 1920s ballroom music anticipating the buzz of a crowded bar only to be confronted by the lone bartender, Lloyd.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The visitors were then directed to another room located down a dark corridor where they’d find other scary cues from the film. On entering room 237, another stranger would ask them to write their details in the guest register so they could be contacted.

The Brisbane locals that didn’t run out screaming left the bar with a mysterious invitation and code to enter a website – stellagoldroom.com

Other great work they are currently behind include;

Another great campaign they have running at the moment is MTV Vote for Snoop.

Which is a group of viral videos with rapper Snoop Dogg trying to get people to vote for Snoop Dogg to get citizenship in Australia. Very clever.
