The 2nd Revision of the Top 50 Australian Marketing Blogs was featured in B&T (p34) magazine.

Changes:
This month I have given categories for each of the blogs, this I hope will give people a better idea of the blogs they should be reading.

The methodology has excluded the Bloglines (RSS subscription) because I believed it was not an inaccurate measure.

I also note that there are a number of people who have changed domains and lost their ranking (Creative is not a Department and Inspiration Room) I am looking at a way to fairly compensate these people.

If there is any bugs with your links, change of categories or ideas of how to make the list better please email me at julian@thepopulation.com.au. Thankyou to Peter Wagstaff for helping create this list, he also has a great podcast that is well worth listening too, Marketing Today.

Hi Julian, thanks for including Classy Marketing's blog! How often do you revise the list?
Keep up the good work!

Hi Jules,

Thanks for the inclusion on the list.

I just want to add that I checked my GooglePage Rank value on http://www.prchecker.info and it is 4/10 not 0, unless I'm missing something?

Thanks again!

Kate

Thanks Julian... very surprised to see I'm in there at all (#74), but very humbled.

Hey Classymarketign, I will revise the list in January 2009. The list is growing at quite a rate!

Hey Kate, I did the calculations about 2 weeks ago because I had to get stuff ready for B&T, alot of peoples results have changed (aka inspiration room), if i did the results now they would be near the Top 10. It acts as a snapshot at the time, hopefully in the future it would be great to be evolving by itself similar to Power150.

Marketing is a dirty word, no worries! Hope you find some other good blogs!

w00t!

Cheers for the ranking Julian. Marketingmag.com.au is working pretty hard to build a repository of cool content for marketers, so it's great to be ranked at #17.

Actually, this ranking goes out to all the great contributors who have worked so hard to get the site to where it's at currently. You all totally rock!

Alex White, IE
Aquent
Brendon Cook, oOh!media
David Gillespie, IE
Eliot Harper, Eliot & Company
Frank Chamberlin, Action Words
Martyn Thomas/Tamir Berkman, FRANk
Geoffrey McDonald-Bowll, Starship
Gerry McCusker, Engage ORM
Jonathan Sinton, Research International
Julian Cole (!)
Karl Treacher, Brand Behaviour
Love Digital
Luke Farley, LCubed
Luke Reilly, Six Degrees Executive
Malcolm Treanor, Acxiom
Michael Burrows, Brand Music
Michael Page
Peter Applebaum, Tick Yes
Ross McNab, Eyeblaster

Massive effort guys, and it's going to be great to see the amazing future marketing content we can bring to the community.

Cheers again everyone :)

Apologies in advance for bringing up a few quibbles, Jules.

First up, you have dropped Bloglines from your methodology. Fair enough. However your reason for doing so seems a little strange:

"The methodology has excluded the Bloglines (RSS subscription) because I believed it was not an inaccurate measure."

Surely you mean "it was"?

Next up, London Calling.

Andrew might well be an Aussie living in London, but he states clearly on his blog:

"About the Author: Based in London, Andrew Grill is an experienced Telecoms Senior Executive"

He goes on to say:

"To contact Andrew directly please call +44 788 198 6694" That makes it a Pommy blog, surely?

Finally to BannerBlog. It's a good site. Created by top Oz talent. No arguments there. In fact I am a regular visitor myself.

It's an excellent site to see the latest banner ads. But that's pretty much it. Don't get me wrong, I'm a BannerBlog fan, but how can you justify a Pioneer ranking of 8?

The content may get you thinking about banner ads, but it's hardly "thought provoking" is it?

As I said up front, apologies for the quibbles. Keep up the good work....Stan

Andrew Grill said...

Stan, you're absolutely right, I am an Australian living in London – however the criteria for inclusion in the list was you had to be “Australian, or living in Australian”. I definitely fit the first one.

You will note in Brad Howarth’s B&T article my blog was not included in the story – even though I came in at number 7.

The blog does however report on the Australian mobile scene (blog post coming up shortly about my old company Seeker Wireless winning a Vodafone partner award) and I would hope that London Calling has a useful European view on mobile advertising that is relevant for an Australian audience.

When I was working in the mobile marketing space in Sydney, I found that Australia was up to 18 months behind the UK, so perhaps the blog can be a good look at what’s coming next.

Thanks so much to Julian for compiling the list and for including www.london-calling.org.uk

Hey Julian,

ranking blogs is always going to be tough. Alexa rating is one that I always get confused about. It's not a very good gauge at all on traffic, it's usually widely over or under estimating traffic.

One thing I think is a good indicator on how well a blog is going is to track comments. something like

# of comments on last 20 post comments / 20

so a blog that gets a lot of comments per post is given more points. As isn't the purpose of a "blog" to generate conversations? Not just back slapping links

this formula however would take ages to process.

another metric could be

# of updates in last 30 days. The more updates the more points. As again a blog should be as regular as a coffee drinker.

Lastly we could ask all bloggers to publish their Feedburner subscription numbers (one easy setting) and use that. Some blogs with Full RSS feeds will get low traffic as a lot of their readers do so through reader. So site traffic isn't a good gauge any more.

Also last thing. I find it weird that the B&T article about the top 50 bloggers didn't even talk to us who run the #1 blog and have for a while. In fact we were blogging before it was cool :)

Also please update your comment system to disqus.com the blogger comment system is shithouse.

Thanks Julian, appreciate the inclusion.

As an aside, I hope the ranking doesn't change some people's blogs, as I saw happen in the UK when people changed their posts to include more links et cetera in order to climb the (measurement) ranks, but it's nice to see a list of other blogs to check out.

Thanks again, this obviously takes a bit of effort.

You could have the perfect product at the perfect price, and execute the perfect place & promotion…but if the people’s perception is negative towards your business/product/service then the other four points don’t really matter. The perception is ultimately what you need to influence first.

Julian credit to you, this would not have been an easy task and believe me I was so chuffed when I opened up B&T and saw my blog up there. Awesome acknowledgment so thank you.

Also want to add to i think Stan was right, to me blogging is about communicating voice and opinion... It's about being objective. BannerBlog is awesome, but it isn't any of those things. Isn't it just an aggregator of creative work?

Anyways, thanks again for the props and rock on.

Julian Cole has extended his Top 25 Marketing Blog list to well over 100 entries ... which, no doubt, takes a great deal of time and effort. It is great to see a growing number of writers taking the time and making the effort to engage in discussions about marketing and brands in a landscape that is under constant transformation. Be sure to check out the full list at AdspacePioneers. I have chosen to list those blogs ranking in the last 10 of the 100 -- each of which contains fantastic content. It seems that there is a great depth of quality thinking right across the list -- boding well for the Australian marketing landscape.

Hi Julian,
Good work on getting out the 100.

I'm excited to be making my debut at 101 and looking forward to cracking the 100. It would be great to see some other bloggers getting in on the brand entertainment act specifically (although obviously it's a subject covered in various marketing blogs.

Cheers

In terms of Bannerblog I see as still a blog because they talk about more than just banners, http://www.bannerblog.com.au/news/

Which is broader marketing and advertising news

Thanks Ash for the ideas on other criteria to measure the post. In terms of comments I agree with you that it is a good engagement measurement, I actually take it into account when I am coming up with the Pioneer score. However to make it a measurement by itself would be alot of legwork but I will look into it.

Julian is using a ranking system similar to the AdAge Power 150 list, ranking the blogs out of 10 on Google Page rank, Technorati authority, Technorati blog reactions, Alexa Page Ranking, and Bloglines subscriptions.

I noticed in B&T that you have ranked my OLD Typepad site rather than the current www.mediahunter.com.au URL. That old site hasn't been used for ten months.

Hoping you can include the real site on this list.
