Note to self: Blog Post on Poverty tomorrow!!!

Blog Action Day is tomorrow, the day is organized to raise awareness about poverty. World Vision is pretty much awesomeness and have created a pile of information and resources on the topic at their site Learnaboutpoverty so there is no excuse for you not to post something about the topic tomorrow.

There have been a number of really exciting social media projects coming from the Not For Profit sector in Australia at the moment. Blue Day 2008, Amnesty International Chinese Internet Censorship, World Vision Stir, I presented to Earth Hour crew last week and they are keen to do something next year and I am personally working on the Seek Volunteers Unplugged (more details to come).

I think that the blogging and twitter community is more receptive to Not For Profit causes and I don’t know how successful the business sector will be at replicating the success with social media projects. Thoughts?

Congrats to Steve and Ross for helping to create a really good resource and getting the word out to the community.

  1. Hey Julian,

Thanks for the support. On the NGO-cum-social media thing I tend to agree. It's 'easy' for us as we have a cause which is so much larger than us, thus it's easier to create a real sense of participation.

The corporate/for-profit companies that do generate some social buzz (Apple, Google, Microsoft, others) tend to stand for more than just 'product' or revenues. It's just a matter of companies finding the action they want people to take, and then understanding what that will achieve FOR the participants.

    Just my thoughts :)

  3. Jules, good stuff. You know I think social causes are great in context of using social media, as long as we don't over do it and it becomes like those door knockers of old ! I think commercial entities should consider supporting a social cause to use social media in a more meaningful way, than just doing facebook / myspace competitions etc. Anyway Have a Happy day and get that Blog post up on poverty! 4. Hey Fi, I really hope that we do not get to that point where we have overkill of charities online, that would be a real shame. However it is a very likely case at the same time. I will have to put on my thinking cap to think how this can be averted.

Hey Joshie, glad to hear that you are keen to write on the subject as well. The more the better! : )
