Top 50 Australian Marketing Pioneer Blogs

Welcome to the first ‘Top 50 Australian Marketing Pioneers Blog’ list.

I realised after nearly 2 years of blogging, I really didn’t have any idea of who was blogging around the topic of Marketing in Australia. I decided to make this list in order to shed light on the Australian Marketing Blogosphere and hopefully connect you with some great Australian Marketing thinkers.

The ranking system is very similar to the AdAge Power 150 methodology. I have used the same variable to rank the blogs (Google Page Ranks (10), Technorati Authority (10), Technoati Blog Reactions (10), Alexa Page Ranking (10), Bloglines (10).

I have also added a Pioneer score (10), this is a subjective score which is scored in terms of the blogs ability to have pioneering thoughts about Marketing. I believe it is our role as Marketing bloggers to discover and inform the rest of the industry about the changing Marketing landscape.

To be eligible

1. The author of the blog must be Australian or living in Australia
2. The main focus of their blog must be on a topic within Marketing (Advertising, Social Media Marketing, Public Relations, Marketing Research, etc.)

If you are not on this list and would like to be, please email julian@nakedcomms.com.au
This list will be updated every 3 months (Next update - September 2008).

As published in

This list will be published in the August Edition of Marketing Magazine.

Hey Jules,

kudos on an excellent initiative - really great to see you doing something to bring the community even further together and great incentive for other blogs to pull up their socks and push for the top 50.

One thing I was wondering is whether anywhere in your calculations the number of RSS subscribers a blog has features? I'm always impressed not just by PageRank and impressions, but also by the ability of a blog to foster a sense of community and to have repeat readers who follow the posts regularly.

This may be somewhere in the equation, but where?

Good job again mate,

Scotland

Hey Jules,

would also be cool if when I mouseover the icons for each of the six categories I could see a description of what they mean/how they are calculated.

I'm sure people will want to better understand the rankings system, and having a bit clearer info on what you're basing your decisions on (for the Pioneer ranking especially) would be really great.

Anywho, that's my 2 cents worth. Cheers!

Julian Cole said...

Thanks for the response Scotland. I will update the icons tomorrow with explanations.

Great initiative Julian.

Someone needed to do something like this as there is a lack of relevant Aussie "lists".

Good job.

Craig Wilson

Julian Cole said...

Scotland, I have updated the methodology. http://adspace-pioneers.blogspot.com/2008/06/methodology-for-top-50-australian.html

Craig: Thanks for the great feedback. If you were after a more general list of the Top Australian Bloggers, check out the Blogpond 'Top 100 Australian Blog Index'

Laurel Papworth said...

Hi, for a definitive list of Australian blogs you may want to look at the original (and best) Top 100 Australian Blogs Index (by Meg Tsiamis. Then narrow that down to Marketing blogs (more than 1/2 are marketing blogs).

That way you will catch those of us (Aussies) who write social media marketing blogs on non-Australian hosts such as blogspot. Cheers, Laurel

Stan Lee said...

Whilst I'm no fan of top ten lists, I applaud your initiative Jules. Well done!

I have a couple of interesting observations:

I work with one of the key contributors to Banner Blog, which is at #1 on your list. Given that our agency has two entries in the Top Ten what does this say about us as an agency?

There are blogs on your list that are, I feel, either dead or on life support. The Wayfarer at #38 has not been updated for close to 18 months! During its brief 3 month life it only received 10 posts. And yet it ranks above B&T. Weird!

One place above The Wayfarer in your chart sits The Jason Recliner. This was one of my favourite Oz blogs. However other than a recent 'test post' which featured nothing more than a YouTube video, this blog has been inactive for some time.

Might be worth double checking each blog before you put the next list together, as I feel having dead blogs listed as top blogs undermines the credibility of the list.

Keep up the good work...Stan

David Koopmans said...

Hi,
Thanks for putting this list together and great to be on it. Can I ask you to use the name of my blog, rather than my company though?
So rather than Mokum Marketing, use Business of Marketing & Branding (or any abbreviation you may choose to use....
The blog is really around my personal brand, not my company.
Thanks again and all the best.
David

Zac Martin said...

Congratulations Jules, this is a great list. I've already increased my RSS feed by seven and still have some of the list to go through!

I'd agree with the above comments.

Perhaps on the September list they must have posted within the last three months to remain there? I also like the idea of RSS Subscribers, I'm not exactly sure how Bloglines works but I think it's based on subscribers who are members of Bloglines? Instead, you could use a tool like Feed Compare and standardise their highest peak over the past three months?

A fantastic compilation and I'm honoured to be #34. I think I'm also the youngest to appear on the list!

Hello Jules,
Great concept!

Unless my decreasing powers of comprehension have failed again, where is Agribusiness Marketing placed?

Julian Cole said...

I think I should have stuck a big BETA symbol on the list. The list and measurement tools will only get better with time. Please don’t take it personally if your blog is not on the list, I just probably didn’t find it when I was hunting. Email me a URL and I will make sure that it gets on the list for September.

@Zac, Thanks for the tip for Feedcompare (a quick play with it and it didn’t seem very user friendly, I will further investigate though). The 3 month rule is a great idea! I am going to make that part of the eligibility in the September edition.

@Grieveas, What was the URL for Agribusiness Marketing?

@David Koopmans, I have made the relevant changes

*puzzled* I think I see what you have done. Is the link for MEG supposed to be to blogpond.com.au? instead it goes to Laketrees (Kim)for a second time (first is correct?)...?

I didn't think you would leave Meg out when she was one of the founders of the blogger community and so on :)

Don't forget to check through the top Australian WOMEN bloggers for marketing bloggers. *winks*

Hi Jules,

Itlooks good...keep up the good work.

Stan Lee said...

Can you really classify your #7, Small Business Branding, as an Australian blog, Jules?

It does have a couple of Aussie contributors, but most of its posts come from Canadians and Americans.

I just discovered SBB, courtesy of your list, so big thanks for that. But I really don't think it's a genuine Oz Blog.

PublicityQueen said...

Hi Jules

This is fantastic! I admire your initiative and nous - you're seriously onto something here.

And I have to say that I'm thrilled at being mentioned on the list - it certainly validates the sense of sharing I try to achieve with the blog.

I can't wait to track this over time and I imagine your pioneering list (both in name and in nature!) will become a serious benchmarking tool - as well as a must-read list.

Great work in compiling this list. I imagine it took a lot of blood, sweat and tears. Just like the others that have responded to you, I am chuffed to have come in at #29.

Look forward to the next edition. Until then...

Hey Jules,

I was really chuffed to see Innovation Feeder to make it on your list, let alone to come in at #20, what a great surprise!

Kudos to you for putting this together, I look forward to checking out some new ones I haven't come across yet.

Great idea Jules.

But it's obviously a rubbish list cos you don't have my blog on there. :P

Lemme know when you're up in Sydney next and I'll bribe you for a higher rank with some beers.

Julian Cole said...

Hey Hodgie,

I have already got you pencilled in for the next list update ;)

I am going to be joining you in Sydney so that one beer might turn into a few.

Ben Shepherd said...

the interesting thing about this list is being on it (and it being reproduced) potentially inflates your ranking in technorati (based on links to) ... which then helps those sites with the next list

consider me next time - http://mimelbourne.blogspot.com - too ;)

IainM said...

I honestly think that using Bloglines as a rating method in the formula against is probably skewing the ranking system.

1. It could be spoofed and manipulated very easily.
2. Many blogs promote use other services such as feedburner for subscriptions. Bloglines is one of many - so it's playing into the territory of who promotes Bloglines in their blog making it a rather subjective count as opposed to scientific.

Bottom line - # of subscriptions is probably not a very reliable indicator and certainly does not deserve equal rating against pagerank, alexa etc in the formula.

BTW - Good work Julian! Keep it up!
:)

Julian Cole said...

Iain, you have got to get out of my brain! : ) I was just thinking this atm, I have excluded Bloglines from the latest list for that reason. Good to see a corporate blog actually responding to other people in the blogosphere! ; )

IainM said...

Thanks Julian - great move.

BTW: The day our blog becomes 'corporate' we'll all walk out of here! Our blog has always been 100% owned by the staff, complete with warts and typos - but hopefully keeps it as genuine as you can get.

I have always been curious about functionality in websites and, well, the world in general. I read this article with great interest. It does seem to me that the reason we comment is to speak our minds so why not have the comment field first? However, as others have pointed out, one gets used to the conventions regardless of reason.
